Art(hur) Smith

AKA one of the most bad-ass jewelry designers. Ever.

I went to the Brooklyn Museum last weekend to check out an exhibition of his work, From the Village to Vogue: The Modernist Jewelry of Art Smith. I had never seen his work before going to the exhibition and it was amazing. Unfortunately, there were very few pieces on view. Anyways, I've never been much of a writer so let's look at some pics, shall we?

Some sweet photos of models wearing Art Smith pieces. Incidentally, the exhibition also had contact sheets of some of these images and he shot these in his apartment with a desk lamp.

Look at those earrings. Stunning. Click to enlarge.

Other reasons to go to the Brooklyn Museum:

Killer necklace from the African wing made of ivory and hair(?).

Rodin in the entrance to the museum.

Luckily, Art Smith was better with words: "
A piece of jewelry is in a sense an object that is not complete in itself. Jewelry is a 'what is it?' until you relate it to the body. The body is a component in design just as air and space are. Like line, form, and color, the body is a material to work with. It is one of the basic inspirations in creating form." Thank you for putting *it* into words.

This exhibition has really inspired me to work on more one of a kind pieces that are more sculptural and reflect the body more. Get ready.

Welcome!

I have decided to start a blog to help get the word out on my jewelry line, Discreet Charm. Besides shameless self promotion, I plan on posting about other artists, art happenings, movies and books that interest me. I hope you enjoy my blog and Happy New Year!
